“Don’t Tell Grieving Parents What to Do” — Sowore Calls Wike a ‘Foolish Man’ Over Kidnapping Remarks
By Usa Yakubu
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, describing him as a “foolish man” over comments urging Nigerians not to politicise recent kidnapping incidents in the country.
Wike’s remarks came amid public outrage over the abduction of students, where he reportedly questioned why similar protests were not organised in Abuja when teachers were kidnapped in other parts of Nigeria. The FCT minister argued that insecurity should not be turned into a political issue.
His comments, however, sparked backlash from many Nigerians who believe citizens have the right to hold public officials accountable over the worsening security situation across the country.
Reacting to the statement, Sowore accused Wike of being insensitive to the pain of affected families, insisting that grieving parents and concerned citizens should not be told how to respond when their children are abducted.
The activist’s comments have further fueled debate online, with supporters and critics of both men expressing differing views on whether public demonstrations and criticism of government responses to insecurity amount to politicising tragic events.
The controversy comes as concerns continue to grow over recurring cases of kidnapping and insecurity in several parts of Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for stronger action from security agencies and government authorities.
