Peter Obi Announces Exit from African Democratic Congress (ADC), Cites Recurring Internal Crises
By Fatima Muhammad Abubakar
Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has officially announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal divisions, ongoing court cases, suspicion among party members, and a highly toxic political environment. This environment has been compared to the circumstances surrounding his previous exit from the Labour Party, highlighting a recurring pattern of political unrest and instability that seems to characterize his recent political journey.
In a comprehensive statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed the emotional toll that Nigerian politics has taken on him. He pointed out that the political landscape is fraught with intimidation, constant scrutiny, and relentless criticism, not only from opponents but also from some individuals within his own circles. Obi emphasized that his decision to leave the ADC was not aimed at personal grievances against key figures within the party, such as Chairman Senator David Mark or elder statesman Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Instead, he reiterated his respect for these leaders and clarified that his departure was driven by larger systemic issues rather than personal conflicts.
Obi attributed much of the turmoil within the party to external influences, specifically accusing “the Nigerian state and its agents” of interfering in the internal affairs of political parties. He argued that such interference has led to destabilization through a series of court cases, internal conflicts, and a climate of suspicion that undermines party cohesion and democratic processes. These external pressures have, according to Obi, created a political environment where internal disagreements are often fueled or exacerbated by outside forces, making it difficult for genuine party growth or effective governance.
Despite the internal chaos, Obi emphasized that his primary focus remains on serving Nigeria and addressing the nation’s pressing issues. He expressed a strong desire to prioritize tackling insecurity, hunger, displacement, and the welfare of internally displaced persons (IDPs). His commitment to societal progress is rooted in a belief that political office should serve the people and not be pursued for personal ambition alone. Obi made it clear that he is not desperate for political power; rather, his goal is to see a Nigeria that genuinely cares for its citizens and provides opportunities for all.
His departure occurs at a time of significant realignments within the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Supporters, known as the “Obidients,” remain fiercely loyal and eager to follow him to new political platforms, signaling that his influence endures despite the party change. This move marks Obi’s second major exit from a political party recently, reflecting the ongoing shifts and volatility within Nigeria’s complex political landscape as leaders and supporters navigate the road toward future elections.
