B Block Emerge Champions in A Dramatic Final Despite Red Card

The Student Union Government (SUG) football tournament at the University of Maiduguri came to a thrilling conclusion at the NUGA Games venue, as B Block emerged champions with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Male A in the final.

The tournament featured intense competition from various teams. Defending champions C Block were knocked out earlier in a closely contested 3–2 encounter against Male B. In other fixtures, D Block played out a 1–1 draw with University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) before progressing with a 2–1 penalty shootout victory. Male A also secured a narrow 1–0 win over Titanic, while B Block advanced after eliminating E Block.

The semi-finals delivered high drama as Male A and D Block battled to a 3–3 draw before penalties decided the outcome. Male A triumphed 2–0 in the shootout, thanks to two crucial saves by their goalkeeper. In the other semi-final clash, B Block defeated Male B 3–1 to secure their place in the final.

The final match was a tense and dramatic affair. Male A dominated possession and pressed aggressively in search of a goal but struggled to break down a resilient B Block defense. The breakthrough eventually came in the 77th minute when B Block capitalized on a defensive error to score the decisive goal.

As the match progressed, tension heightened when a B Block player was sent off in the 85th minute after receiving a second yellow card. Despite being reduced to ten men, B Block showed remarkable determination and defensive discipline. Male A intensified their attacks in search of an equalizer but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from the B Block goalkeeper.

In the closing stages, B Block held firm under pressure to secure a 1–0 victory and lift the trophy.

Speaking after the match, a player from B Block expressed excitement over the team’s triumph, noting that the victory was achieved against all odds, especially after going a man down. The team’s goalkeeper, who was named Man of the Match, also shared his joy, stating, “It wasn’t an easy game. We believed in ourselves from the beginning of the tournament, and we are very happy to have won.”

The victory marks a memorable achievement for B Block, who displayed resilience, teamwork, and determination throughout the competition.
