NAMA Warns Nigeria Risks Losing Airspace Surveillance as Ageing TRACON Radar System Faces Obsolescence
By Fatima Muhammad Abubakar
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has issued a serious warning regarding the current state of Nigeria’s airspace monitoring capabilities. The agency expressed concern that the effectiveness of air traffic surveillance is increasingly at risk due to the aging and deteriorating radar infrastructure across the country. According to NAMA Managing Director Farouk Ahmed Umar, the current TRACON system, which is fundamental for managing and controlling air traffic within Nigerian airspace, was installed between 2008 and 2010. However, this system has now become obsolete, with many of its critical components no longer available as spare parts, and limited backup options.
The lifespan of the existing radar system has significantly exceeded the typical 10-year operational expectancy, and technological advancements in global air traffic management have rendered it outdated since 2014. This outdated technology creates significant maintenance challenges, including difficulties in sourcing replacement parts and maintaining optimal functionality. These issues pose a serious threat to the safety and efficiency of air navigation across Nigeria. The situation is compounded by broader infrastructural challenges within Nigeria’s aviation sector, which has been grappling with insufficient funding and budget constraints that hinder timely upgrades and modernization efforts.
The implications of this deteriorating radar infrastructure extend beyond commercial aviation, raising concerns about national security as well. Reliable radar coverage is essential not only for the safe and efficient movement of commercial aircraft but also for monitoring and safeguarding Nigeria’s airspace from potential security threats. The urgency of the matter is underscored by the absence of a clear timeline for the replacement or upgrade of the current radar systems. Despite this uncertainty, NAMA has emphasized the immediate need for intervention to prevent possible disruptions in air traffic control operations.
Experts and industry stakeholders agree that addressing this infrastructure deficit is crucial. They highlight that modern, reliable radar systems are vital for maintaining safe navigation, ensuring security, and supporting the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry. The situation calls for urgent action from government authorities and relevant stakeholders to prioritize funding and implement comprehensive upgrades that will restore confidence in Nigeria’s airspace management capabilities and safeguard both passengers and national security interests.
