Kanuri Cultural Festival to Hold in Maiduguri Next Month

By Adam Mohammed Sheriff

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai El-Kanemi, has said yes to a big Kanuri Cultural Festival. The festival will happen in Maiduguri next month.

The event will take place at Ramat Square. It will start on May 10 and end on May 12. That means it will last for three days.

The festival will show many parts of Kanuri culture. There will be Kanuri food like biyar and masa. People will wear fine Kanuri clothes and caps. There will be music, dancing, and horse riding. Horse riders will wear old warrior dress to show how Kanuri people lived in the past.

Alhaji Zanna Modu is the chairman of the group planning the festival. He said the festival has two main goals. The first goal is to bring peace to Borno. The second goal is to teach young people about their culture.

He said, “Many young people do not know their history. This festival will help them learn and be proud of who they are.”

The festival is not only for people from Borno. Traders and cultural groups from Niger, Chad, and Cameroon will also come. They will bring their own food, dress, and music to share.

Security and health workers will be at Ramat Square during the festival to keep people safe.

The Shehu of Borno said he wants everyone to come and enjoy the event. He also asked people to be peaceful and show good behavior.

This will be the first big Kanuri Cultural Festival in Maiduguri since 2019.
