Easter Tragedy in Benue: Armed Herdsmen Kill 9 in Brutal Pre-Dawn Attack on Agena Community

By Endurance Jonah Idah

In a heartbreaking turn of events just days before Easter celebrations, suspected armed herdsmen have unleashed terror on Agena community in Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, killing at least nine people.

The coordinated assault occurred in the early hours of the morning when residents were still asleep. Eyewitnesses report that over 50 gunmen invaded the peaceful farming community around 5am, setting houses, the central community market, and food barns ablaze. As panicked residents woke up and tried to escape the flames, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately.

Widespread Destruction and Missing Persons

According to residents who spoke to journalists, the attackers showed no mercy, targeting homes and economic structures in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to destroy the community's livelihood. Several houses were completely razed, food reserves meant to sustain families were burnt, and the once-bustling market now lies in ruins.

While nine bodies have so far been recovered, the death toll may rise as several residents remain missing. One person sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. Families are desperately searching for loved ones amid the chaos.

“It is a sad Easter for our people who were preparing for the celebrations before this tragedy struck,” a resident lamented.

Governor Alia Condemns the Attack

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as part of a disturbing pattern of violence targeting communities in the state. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed deep sorrow for the victims and vowed that such acts of terror would not be tolerated.

The governor warned against the ongoing cycle of calculated and selective attacks, assuring residents that security agencies would be directed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

A Recurring Crisis

This latest incident adds to the long list of violent clashes between herders and farming communities in Benue State, a region often referred to as Nigeria’s food basket. The destruction of food barns and markets raises serious concerns about food security and the livelihoods of thousands of residents who depend on agriculture.

As families mourn their loved ones this Easter period, many in Agena and surrounding communities are left in fear, wondering when the cycle of violence will end.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire people of Agena community at this difficult time. We call on security agencies to act swiftly and ensure lasting peace returns to the region.
